Speech and Language Services

Assessment

If you are concerned about your child’s speech-language development, our team will conduct a comprehensive assessment of your child's communication skills, which will include parent and teacher interviews, informal observations, and interactions of the child with his family, teachers and peers. Depending on the findings, our speech-language therapist will then recommend further testing using standardized formal assessments, if required. Once a complete picture has been obtained, we recommend therapy targets/goals and create a therapy plan to best support your child’s development.

Your child may need speech therapy if he or she has:

  • Articulation difficulties: Unclear, inaccurate or inconsistent speech sounds in words or sentences;

  • Phonological processing difficulties: difficulty in organizing sounds in words e.g. ‘tup’ instead of ‘cup.’

Language Therapy

Your child may need language therapy if he or she:

  • Is not using gestures e.g. pointing, nodding, shaking his/her head

  • Is not using words or has limited vocabulary

  • Has difficulty following instructions at home and in class

Key Benefits of Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy helps children overcome communication challenges, improving their ability to express themselves and interact with others.

    1. Improving Communication Skills

Speech therapy plays a vital role in helping children improve their communication skills.

Through targeted exercises, children learn to articulate words more clearly, making it easier for others to understand them. This progress in speech clarity boosts their confidence in everyday interactions.

Therapy also focuses on enhancing language stimulation and comprehension, allowing children to better understand instructions, ask questions, and engage in conversations. As their language skills develop, children become more confident communicators, both at home and in social settings.

Clearer speech and improved language comprehension enable children to express themselves without hesitation, naturally building their self-confidence and making them more assured communicators in all aspects of their lives.

What to Expect from Our Speech Therapy Sessions

Families starting speech therapy at Wonder Words can expect a structured, supportive process designed to meet their child’s unique communication needs.

From the initial consultation to regular progress updates, our approach ensures that children receive the best possible care throughout their therapy journey.

    1. Initial Consultation and Assessment

The initial consultation at Wonder Words involves a thorough assessment of the child's speech and language abilities. Our therapists conduct various tests and observations to understand the child's specific communication challenges.

This process includes evaluating articulation, language comprehension, and social interaction skills. Parents are encouraged to share their concerns and observations, which helps in forming a complete picture of the child's needs.

The assessment results guide us in creating a targeted therapy plan that addresses the child’s areas for improvement, ensuring that the therapy process is effective from the very start.

    2. Regular Progress Updates

Families receive regular updates on their child's progress. At Wonder Words, we believe communication with caregivers is key to ensuring success.

After each session, our therapists provide detailed feedback on what was covered, highlighting the progress the child is making and any areas that may need further focus. We also offer practical, easy-to-implement tips and activities for parents to use at home.

These activities are designed to reinforce the skills being developed during therapy, allowing parents to play an active role in their child's speech and language therapy (SLT) journey. By incorporating these techniques at home, parents can extend the benefits of therapy into the child’s everyday environment, helping to accelerate progress.

This involvement also fosters stronger parent-child interaction and creates opportunities for positive reinforcement, which can be crucial for the child’s confidence and motivation. Families can also expect scheduled reviews to adjust the therapy plan as needed, ensuring the child is always moving towards their developmental goals.

    3. Customised Therapy Plans

Wonder Words develops therapy plans based on each child's unique developmental goals.

These plans focus on addressing the specific areas identified during the assessment, such as speech clarity, language understanding, or social communication skills. Our therapists use engaging, child-friendly techniques to ensure that therapy is interactive and enjoyable.

The activities are designed to suit the child's interests, keeping them motivated while working on essential communication skills. The therapy plan is flexible and evolves as the child progresses, ensuring continuous support for their development.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Parents often have many questions when considering speech and language therapy for their child. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive at Wonder Words.

    1. What Age Should My Child Start Therapy?

Speech therapy can begin as early as below 1 year of age, with early intervention being key to addressing communication challenges before they impact social and academic development.

However, it’s never too late to start. If your child is showing signs of speech or language delays, a speech therapist can assess their needs and determine the right time to begin therapy.

    2. How Long Does Therapy Take?

The length of speech therapy varies depending on the child's individual needs and the severity of the communication challenges. Some children may need a few months of therapy, while others may require ongoing sessions for a year or more.

Progress is reviewed regularly to ensure the therapy plan evolves with the child's development. The therapist will give you an idea of the expected timeline during the initial consultation.

    3. How Can Parents Support Therapy at Home?

Parents play a crucial role in supporting therapy outside of sessions. Engaging in activities that encourage communication, such as reading together, practising sounds, and playing language-based games, can reinforce the skills learned in therapy.

Our therapists provide parents with guidance and strategies to use at home, ensuring the child continues to improve between sessions.

    4. What Conditions Can Speech Therapy Help With?

Speech therapy can help with a variety of conditions, including speech delays, articulation disorders, language comprehension issues, social communication difficulties, fluency problems like stuttering, and also includes feeding therapy to address difficulties with chewing, swallowing, and oral motor skills.

Children with developmental disorders, such as autism or Down syndrome, can also benefit from speech therapy to improve communication skills and social interactions.

    5. How Do I Know If My Child Needs Speech Therapy?

Signs that your child may need speech therapy include difficulty pronouncing words, trouble understanding language, limited vocabulary, or struggles with social interaction.

If your child isn’t reaching typical communication milestones for their age, or if teachers or caregivers express concerns, a speech therapy evaluation can help determine the next steps.
