Speech Therapy Training for Parents

Our Hanen-certified speech-language therapists can train parents or caregivers of a child with communication difficulties over 6-8 sessions, using the following Hanen programs:

It Takes Two to Talk

The It Takes Two to Talk Program targets parents of young children (from birth to 5 years old) diagnosed with a language delay. The program provides personalized, small group sessions where parents can acquire practical strategies to assist their children in learning language naturally during daily routines.

Expected outcomes:

  • Recognize your child's communication stage and style to identify goals with the speech-language pathologist

  • Identify what motivates your child to communicate

  • Use "Follow the Child's Lead" strategy to boost confidence and encourage communication

  • Modify daily routines to facilitate turn-taking in interactions

  • Build confidence in your child by following their lead

  • Communicate with your child in a way that enhances their understanding and encourages language use

  • Apply the strategies during playtime and reading to foster interaction and language learning

More Than Words

Parents of young children on the autism spectrum or with social communication difficulties may want to make communication easier for their child, and help them make connections with others and experience less frustration.

Through our More Than Words program, parents can learn specific, research-based strategies to support their child's social communication and play skills, leading to more enjoyable everyday routines and interactions together. Developed by experienced speech-language pathologists and backed by extensive research, More Than Words is an evidence-based program that has been proven in multiple studies to enhance the social communication skills of children on the autism spectrum.

Expected outcomes:

  • Learn what motivates your child to communicate

  • Set appropriate and realistic goals using your knowledge about your child

  • Make interactions with your child last longer

  • Use pictures and print to help your child's understanding

  • Talk in ways that your child understands

  • Develop your child's play skills using strategies
